Austria: Three iconic wine regions. One unforgettable journey.

What to Expect

Vienna is the only capital city in the world with a significant, commercially active wine region inside city limits, and it is just the beginning of this journey.

Over four nights based in Vienna, PhillyWine's first-ever wine tour guides you through three of Austria's most celebrated wine regions: the Wachau Valley, Vienna's own urban vineyards, and Burgenland. Each offers a distinct and memorable story in the glass. You will taste at benchmark estates, walk the terraced slopes of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and discover the bold reds and world-renowned sweet wines of the Pannonian plain.

Traveling in October means Austria's shoulder season at its best: comfortable temperatures, unhurried tastings, and warm, genuine hospitality. This is an immersive wine experience shared with a community of people who love wine as much as you do, designed in partnership with Aiken For A Trip, whose small group wine experiences in Europe's most celebrated wine regions are built on decades of trusted client relationships.

Private English-speaking guides, masterclasses, curated regional lunches, and transportation are all included. Every detail is handled. Your classroom, uncorked.

  • Technical tastings at benchmark Wachau estates, exploring the Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd classification system.

  • Advanced tastings of single-vineyard Ried wines and their longterm aging potential.

  • A private visit and tasting in a historic Vienna wine cellar.

  • A terroir analysis workshop at a leading family-owned Viennese estate.

Day by Day

Day 1 - Saturday, October 10: Arrival in Vienna. A private transfer brings you from Vienna Airport to the Miiro Palais Rudolf, your home for four nights in the heart of the city, steps from the Danube Canal. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in one of Europe's most livable capitals.

Day 2 — Sunday, October 11: The Wachau Valley Deep Dive. This field-study day focuses on the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape internationally recognized for producing some of Austria's most distinguished dry white wines. You will investigate the interaction between geology, topography, climate, and viticultural practice through technical tastings at benchmark estates, exploring the Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd classification system, steep terraced vineyards, primary rock soils, and site expression in Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. A curated lunch highlights traditional Lower Austrian cuisine, and the day closes with an advanced tasting of single-vineyard Ried wines and their long-term aging potential.

Day 3 - Monday, October 12: Urban Viticulture and Vienna's Wine Culture. Vienna is the only capital city in the world with a significant, commercially active wine appellation within its municipal boundaries. The morning pairs a guided exploration of the historic center with curated gastronomic and sensory experiences, concluding with a private visit and tasting in a historic wine cellar. The afternoon brings a terroir analysis workshop at a leading family-owned Viennese estate, examining the influence of the Vienna Woods, the Danube River, and the historic Wiener Gemischter Satz field blend. The evening is spent at a traditional Heuriger, where dinner and local wines bring Vienna's wine tavern culture to life.

Day 4 - Tuesday, October 13: The Pannonian Influence and Noble Rot in Burgenland. This day explores the dramatic transition from Austria's cool-climate whites to the warmer Pannonian landscapes of Burgenland. Begin in Mittelburgenland, known as Blaufrankischland, with a masterclass on Blaufrankisch, Austria's flagship red variety. After a regional gastronomy lunch, turn to Lake Neusiedl and the biology of noble rot with a tasting of Ruster Ausbruch and related sweet wine styles, followed by a guided walk through the historic town of Rust and a final comparative masterclass at a distinguished estate.

Day 5 - Wednesday, October 14: Departure. A private Mercedes V Class transfer returns you to Vienna Airport, with the option to extend your trip.
