Wine Classes for Food and Wine Professionals

Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) ClassesWSET logo

Our courses, from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) in England, lead to internationally-recognized credentials in the food, wine, and hospitality industries.

In the United States, there is no official course of wine education that is specifically required before someone can get a wine-related job such as a restaurant sommelier or as a sales rep for a wine distributor or winery. People get these positions through experience, connections, and whatever knowledge about wine they pick up along the way. Restaurants rely on their waiters to provide wine advice to customers; if one waiter is noticeably superior, he or she may be rewarded with the title (and additional income) of sommelier. Wine distributors and wineries look to retail wine stores for their new employees; if a retail clerk has been especially skilled in selling their wines in the store, this is evidence that he or she may be successful at the wholesale or winery level, and a job is offered. Our classes therefore can't "certify" you to get such a position, but they can help you attain a level of wine knowledge to qualify you to do the job well.

Some of the people who take our classes are already employed by restaurants or hotels, or at the retail or wholesale level of the wine industry. Our courses can be a very effective way to enhance their wine knowledge. This added knowledge may increase their opportunities for promotion.
